Quinnipiac Pulls Away Late, Takes Game One from NSU

NORFOLK, Va. – Quinnipiac's Evan Vulgamore went 4-for-5 with two solo homers and four runs batted in to lift the Bobcats to a 14-4 win over Norfolk State in the opener of their three-game series Friday at Marty L. Miller Field.

Vulgamore was one of five Quinnipiac players with at least two hits. Adam Collins and Justin Hayes each went 2-for-4 for the Spartans (0-8).

Vulgamore doubled and scored on a double by Brian Moskey in the second. Collins hit the first of his two doubles on the day and scored on a two-out double by Hayes to tie the game in the bottom of the third.

The Bobcats scored four runs in the fourth through sixth innings to take control. Andre Marrero hit an RBI double and Moskey scored on a double-steal attempt to give QU a 3-1 edge in the fourth. Dylan Lutz's RBI single in the fifth and Vulgamore's solo homer in the sixth stretched the lead to 5-1.

The Spartans rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Justin Hayes reached on an infield hit and scored on a fielder's choice by Caleb Ward to start the rally. Korey Singh then laced an RBI double to the gap in left and scored on a two-out Bobcat error to bring the Spartans within 5-4.

But the Bobcats plated nine runs in the last two innings, six in the eighth and three more in the ninth to pull away. Vulgamore hit his second solo homer to start the rally in the eighth and Kevin Huscher added a two-run single later in the frame. Liam Scafariello's RBI double in the ninth closed the scoring.

Tyler Poulin (2-1) earned the win on the mound for the Bobcats. He struck out six and allowed two earned runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings of work.

Chase Anderson (0-2) took the loss for NSU. He pitched a season-high seven innings and gave up five runs. He fanned a season-best nine hitters.
