Quinnipiac Pitches Past NSU, 7-1

NORFOLK, Va. – Quinnipiac left hander Chris Enns took a no-hitter into the sixth and struck out 10 batters to lift the Bobcats to a 7-1 win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

The Bobcats improved to 3-4 with the win, while NSU drops to 0-9.

NSU starter Ridge Walker pitched around trouble in the first three innings, stranding two Bobcats in each frame while striking out five. But Quinnipiac broke through with a two-out, two-run single by Dylan Lutz in the top of the fourth.

The Bobcats took advantage of a couple NSU errors to double its lead in the top of the fifth.

NSU got its first runners and base hits of the day off Enns in the sixth. Kam Holland led off with a walk and moved to third on a two-out double by Dionte Brown, the Spartans' first hit of the day. Justin Hayes followed with an RBI single off the third baseman's glove for the Spartans' first run.

But the Bobcats got two runs back in the seventh thanks to a pair of Spartan miscues, a wild pitch and an RBI fielder's choice by Kevin Huscher. Colton Bender's RBI groundout in the ninth accounted for the game's final run.

Walker (0-3) took the loss despite fanning a season-high six batters over six innings. He allowed nine hits and four runs, two earned, with three walks in his longest outing of the season. James Deloatch pitched three strong innings in relief, allowing just one hit and three unearned runs.

Enns lasted seven innings and gave up just two hits and one run. He walked just one and struck out 10. Christian Nicolosi pitched two scoreless innings to finish off the game.

Huscher and Samuel LaChance had two hits apiece for QU. Brown, Hayes, Crosby and Alsander Womack had the Spartans' four hits.

Due to travel concerns for Quinnipiac heading home Sunday, the teams will not play the third game of their series. NSU hosts William & Mary at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Marty L. Miller Field.
