NORFOLK, Va. – Kyle Wrighte and Jason Waldman drove in four runs apiece, and Matt McDermott had four hits to lead an 18-hit attack as William & Mary topped Norfolk State 17-2 on Tuesday afternoon at
Marty L. Miller Field.
McDermott was 4-for-5 and Jack Cone 3-for-4 with five runs scored for the Tribe, who improved to 9-1.
Stephen Baughan went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer, and
Seth Hockett went 2-for-4 in his first career at bats to lead the Spartans (0-10).
W&M scored in its first time up, as a Hunter Smith sacrifice fly in the top of the first got the scoring started. McDermott doubled in two runs in the second, Wrighte singled in two during a four-run fourth and then doubled in two more in the sixth as the Tribe extended its lead.
The Spartans cut into their deficit in the sixth.
Alsander Womack reached on an infield hit before Baughan blasted a two-run homer over the wall in right field for his first homer of the year, bringing NSU within 10-2.
But Waldman hit a three-run double in a six-run W&M seventh and also singled in a run in the eighth as the Tribe pulled away.
Zach Tsakounis earned the win for W&M with five scoreless innings. He struck out eight.
Jonathan Mahoney (0-2) took the loss for the Spartans after giving up seven runs over four innings of work.
The Spartans were scheduled to travel to face Richmond on Wednesday, but that game has been postponed to April 3 due to the weather forecast in central Virginia. The Spartans are back in action this weekend when they host a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday with Savannah State.
