NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State surrendered a late lead to Savannah State, but the Spartans rallied to score four times in the bottom of the eighth to top the Tigers 10-7 and complete a three-game series sweep on Sunday at
Marty L. Miller Field.
Caleb Ward's sacrifice fly scored the go-ahead run for NSU (3-10) in the bottom of the eighth, and a two-run single by
Adam Collins provided the final margin.
Trey Hanchey (1-0), who earned the save in game one of the series, pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the win out of the Spartan bullpen.
NSU rapped out a season-high 15 hits Sunday, including season-best games from
Justin Hayes (4-for-5) and
Brandon Crosby (3-for-4). The Spartans recorded four of those hits in the eighth after the Tigers (2-7-1) pulled ahead with a four-run top of the eighth. With SSU trailing 6-3 entering the eighth, Tiger second baseman Jalen Atterbury hit a two-run single and scored on Luis Lamarche's RBI base hit to tie the game at 6-all. Garrett Bogart's sacrifice fly put the Tigers in front, 7-6.
But the Spartans had the answer.
Seth Hockett singled to lead off the eighth, and
Mikey Delgado beat out a bunt for a single of his own. Hayes lined his fourth hit of the game into right field to load the bases.
Alsander Womack drew a bases-loaded walk from SSU reliever Joseph Roberson to tie the game at 7-all. Ward's sacrifice fly plated Delgado with the go-ahead run. After
Stephen Baughan was hit by a pitch, Collins highlighted the rally by lining a two-run single to left-center to stretch the Spartan lead to 10-7.
Hanchey worked around a lead-off walk in the ninth by inducing a double play. After Atterbury singled for his fourth hit of the game, Hanchey got Roberson to fly out to end the contest.
The Spartans started off hot, scoring six runs in the first four innings. After SSU scored an unearned run in the top of the first, NSU wasted little time in tying the game. Ward hit a two-out double in the bottom of the frame and scored on a single by Baughan, knotting the game at 1-all.
The big blow was a three-run second. Collins led off with an infield hit and
Brandon Crosby followed with an RBI triple into the right-field corner.
Ty Hanchey's RBI groundout scored Crosby, and Womack capped the inning with a two-out RBI single to score Hockett, who reached on an error.
Hockett singled in a run in the third and Baughan added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to increase the lead to 6-2.
Atterbury doubled in a run in the sixth to bring the Tigers closer. He finished the game 4-for-6 with four RBIs.
NSU right hander
Jonathan Mahoney took the no-decision despite a quality start. He allowed seven hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts in six innings of work. Roberson, the starting first baseman, was the fourth of five SSU pitchers to see time on the mound and took the loss, yielding three runs in one-third of an inning.
Hayes scored two runs and stole two bases. Crosby had three steals of his own, scored twice and drove in a run. Collins and Hockett both hit 2-for-5, while Womack, Baughan and Collins all drove in two runs apiece.
NSU plays at Longwood at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
