SAVANNAH, Ga. – Norfolk State women's tennis notched its first victory of the season with a 5-2 win at Savannah State on Sunday.
The Spartans (1-4) secured the doubles point in short order.
Naz Karagoz and
Zoe Fraser earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Sofia Shut'ko and Muskaan Ranjan for the pairing's first doubles win of the year. NSU then clinched the point on the second court, where
Joyce Fields and
Paula Fortuno defeated Casi Gilbert and Sansriti Ranjan – 6-2.
The third-seeded flight featuring
Adriana Strode and
Bruna Goncalves against Ekaterina Vorobeva and Christy Turny went unfinished with the Norfolk State duo holding a 5-2 edge.
The Lady Tigers quickly tied the match at 1-1 with a straight-sets victory on court six. Turner defeated Strode by a 7-5, 6-3 margin.
NSU won the next two matches and three of the next four to clinch the win.
Goncalves picked up a two-set victory over Gilbert – winning on the fifth court by the score of 6-4, 6-0. Karagoz then earned her second-straight victory at top-flight singles with a 6-2, 6-1 result against Shut'ko.
Vorobeva kept SSU alive with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep of Fields at No. 4 singles, but the Spartans claimed the last two points of the match.
Fortuno rallied from a first-set loss on the second court to provide NSU the clinching point. Muskaan Ranjan topped the junior from Vila-real, Spain 6-2 in the first set, but Fortuno stormed back to post 6-3 and 6-2 wins in the second and third sets, respectively.
Fraser notched her first singles victory at NSU with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 result against Sansriti Ranjan in the third-seeded match.
The Spartans begin a four-match homestand this Thursday against Longwood at 1 p.m. NSU also hosts South Carolina State, Delaware and Maryland Eastern Shore.
