NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women's tennis dropped its Thursday afternoon match with Longwood by a 4-0 margin.
The two teams split the first two doubles flights with the Lancers (7-2) claiming the doubles point thanks to a victory on the second court.
Crystal Nzewi and Anika Tylek kicked off the afternoon with a 6-2 victory over
Bruna Goncalves and
Adriana Strode at third-seeded doubles.
Naz Karagoz and
Zoe Fraser kept the doubles point in play with a 7-5 win against Marija Venta and Emma Nurgazieva in the top-seeded flight.
The decisive third match was also settled with a 7-5 margin, but it was not in favor of the Spartans (1-5). Yulia Almiron and Jamie Breuning defeated
Paula Fortuno and
Joyce Fields to put LU ahead 1-0.
Three straight victories, all coming in straight-sets, clinched the match for Longwood.
Venta downed Karagoz – 6-2, 6-1 – in the top-flight match before Almiron prevailed against Fraser by a 6-1, 6-4 score on the third court.
Breuning provided the clinching victory at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 result against Fortuno.
Fields dropped the first set of her match on the fourth court, 6-2, but was storming back when the match ended. The junior from Newport News held a 5-2 edge over Nurgazieva in the second set when play came to a halt.
In the other two unfinished matches, Tylek led Goncalves, 5-4, on court five, and Nzewi took the first set against Strode, 6-2.
The Spartans look to rebound on Friday at 2 p.m. when they host South Carolina State.
