NORFOLK, Va. – Alsander Womack went 3-for-4 for the second straight day and
Ridge Walker pitched eight strong innings to lead Norfolk State to a 7-2 win over Delaware State on Saturday afternoon at
Marty L. Miller Field.
The victory clinched a series win for the Spartans (6-10, 2-0 MEAC North), who won their sixth straight game.
NSU led the entire way after scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Center fielder
Justin Hayes led off the inning with a single, then stole second and third bases. With two outs, Hayes then scored on a straight steal of home, sliding in ahead of the throw by pitcher Sean McGrath.
Adam Collins capped the inning with an RBI double that scored
Caleb Ward, who had walked earlier.
The Hornets cut their deficit in half on an RBI groundout by Cole Garey in the fourth. But after singles by
Ty Hanchey and
Seth Hockett led off the Spartans' fifth inning, outfielder
Dionte Brown put NSU ahead 3-1 with an RBI fielder's choice.
The Hornets again drew within one in the seventh. Alex Vasquez, who doubled, scored on a passed ball with two outs.
But Womack's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh again gave NSU some breathing room. The Spartans added insurance with a three-run eighth that included sacrifice flies by Hockett and
Mikey Delgado.
The pitching win was the second in a row for Walker (2-3), the junior left hander. He pitched a season-high eight innings, allowing just three hits and two runs, one earned. He walked five and struck out six.
James Deloatch fanned two batters in a scoreless ninth inning.
Womack's three-hit day was his fourth game this year with at least that many. He now has a 10-game hitting streak and has hit safely in all but one contest this season.
Hanchey and Brown scored two runs apiece for NSU. Brown also stole two of the Spartans' seven bases.
McGrath (1-2) took the loss for the Hornets. He allowed nine hits and five runs with five strikeouts in seven-innings of work.
The teams wrap up their series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
