NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women's tennis dropped a 6-1 decision to Delaware at the NSU Tennis Complex on Sunday.
The Blue Hens (4-9) won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the point.
Sarah Hall and Sarah Whited kicked off the match with a 6-2 win over
Bruna Goncalves and
Adriana Strode on the third court. Tayo Adetunji and Annie Jaskulski then clinched the doubles point with another 6-2 victory, this one against
Paula Fortuno and
Joyce Fields, in the second-seeded flight.
With the point already decided,
Naz Karagoz and
Zoe Fraser picked up a 6-1 decision over Viva Laas and Draga Sabotic. The NSU duo is now undefeated in its last three top-flight doubles contests.
Delaware won the first five singles matches to seal the win.
Jaskulski downed Strode – 6-0, 6-0 – in the No. 6 match before a 6-1, 6-2 win over Goncalves by Whited on the fifth court.
Adetunji provided the winning point on the fourth court with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Fields.
The last three singles flights all needed third-set tiebreakers.
Emily Gotkiewicz split her first two sets against Fraser – 6-2, 3-6 – before claiming a 10-1 win in the tiebreaker in the third flight.
Hall topped Fortuno in the first set 6-1 before falling 6-3 next set. Fortuno then dropped the tiebreaker, 10-5, in the second-seeded flight.
The Spartans ended the day on a high note with a Karagoz victory in the top-seeded flight. Karagoz handled Laas – 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).
NSU opens MEAC play on Wednesday at home against Maryland Eastern Shore.
