Spartans Dominant in 7-0 Win over Maryland Eastern Shore

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Norfolk State women's tennis kicked off conference action in convincing fashion with a 7-0 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on the indoor courts of Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach.
 
Wednesday's match began with singles play, which the Spartans (2-7, 1-0 MEAC) swept while dropping only a single game.
 
Paula Fortuno kicked off the day on the second court with a 6-0, 6-0 straight-sets win over Michal Kittrell. Joyce Fields then followed suit with another 6-0, 6-0 victory, this one coming against Sarah Smith at fourth-seeded singles.
 
NSU moved to within one point of clinching the match with Zoe Fraser's 6-0, 6-1 result against Kenza Katema on court number three before Naz Karagoz provided the match-sealing point with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sarah Adewumi on the first court.
 
Karagoz moved to 5-1 on the season and is on a three-match winning streak.
 
The Spartans wrapped up singles play with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at fifth- and sixth-seeded singles. On the fifth court, Bruna Goncalves handled Lauren Brown, and Adriana Strode downed Tiara Barnes at No. 6 singles.
 
Both Fields and Strode picked up their first singles victories of the season.
 
Norfolk State was equally dominant against the Hawks (0-1, 0-1 MEAC) in doubles competition.
 
Karagoz and Fraser defeated Adewumi and Kittrell, 6-0, in the top-seeded flight. Fortuno and Fields clinched the doubles point for NSU with a 6-1 win over Katema and Smith on the second court. Lastly, Goncalves and Strode defeated Brown and Barns by a 6-0 margin.
 
The Spartans continue conference action on Sunday, when they travel to Delaware State for a 1 p.m. match.
