Spartans Finish Season at Northeast Finest

| By:
NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Norfolk State bowling team got in one last weekend of action for 2018-19 when the Spartans competed in the Northeast Finest and Northeast End of Season Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Hosted by Wilmington University at Bowlerama in New Castle, Delaware, the tournament featured six teams altogether before the start of various conference championships. NSU posted a 1-7 overall record on the weekend.

Saturday's action featured three traditional and two Baker matches, followed by three Baker matches in the bracket round on Sunday. NSU picked up its lone win on Saturday, narrowly defeating Chestnut Hill by a 784-783 score in Baker play.

Earlier in the day in traditional play, the Spartans fell to Chestnut Hill (934-759), Felician (1,053-791) and Wilmington (868-809). After their victory later in the day, the Spartans dropped their other Baker match of the afternoon, 946-782 to Felician.

Freshman Crystal Brewer averaged 200.3 in three traditional games, including a season-high 224 in the last of the three matches. Sophomore McKayla Lang posted a 190.3 average with a season-high game of 212, and freshman Trinity Gray also rolled a season high. Like Lang, Gray's season high came in the second match of the day, with hers being a 198 against Felician.

Gray averaged 169.3 over the three games. Freshmen Arieana Parker and Dieonjonai Haupt also bowled all three games.

The Spartans lost twice to Chestnut Hill on Sunday, including the first match of the day when they forced a seventh game in the best-of-seven Baker format. NSU won games 3 (161-159) and 4 (180-159), and it also took game 6 by a 145-136 score to force the final game. Chestnut Hill, however, won that game for the 4-3 match win.

The Griffins also won the last match of the day over NSU, 4-2. In between those two contests for the Spartans, they suffered a 4-0 loss to No. 6 Maryland Eastern Shore despite posting their two highest games of the day.

The Spartans finished their season at 14-50. NSU only loses one senior off the active roster in Alexa Rodriguez.
