SALISBURY, Md. – Norfolk State used a pair of three-run innings Sunday to earn a 9-6 win over Maryland Eastern Shore in the finale of their three-game series at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The win improved NSU's record to 8-12 overall, 4-2 in the MEAC Northern Division. The Hawks fell to 5-20, 2-4.
Brandon Crosby (2-for-4) had two of NSU's 10 hits. The Spartans stole six bases on the day, with
Dionte Brown and
Adam Collins accounting for two apiece.
After Peter Jamieson's RBI double gave MDES a 1-0 lead in the second, NSU put up three runs in the top of the third.
Alsander Womack's RBI single tied the game. Womack later stole third base and scored on a Hawk error. Collins tacked on a run-scoring single to cap the inning.
The Hawks cut their deficit in half with a run in the fourth before the Spartans widened the gap with a three-run sixth. Two runs scored when the Hawks threw away Crosby's sacrifice bunt attempt.
Seth Hockett then plated a run with a squeeze bunt to give NSU the 6-2 edge.
Crosby singled in a run in the seventh. The Hawks plated two more in the bottom of the inning to get within 7-4, but NSU got them back in the top of the eighth thanks to a pinch-hit RBI double by
Korey Singh and an RBI single by
Caleb Ward.
The Hawks' Devynn Hancock hit a two-out, two-run single in the ninth to account for the final scoring. But Spartan right hander
Jonathan Mahoney got the final out to avoid further damage and finish off his second straight complete game.
Mahoney allowed four earned runs and struck out five to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Nine different Spartans had at least one hit and six had at least one RBI. Crosby was the only Spartan with a multi-hit game. Brown and
Stephen Baughan each scored a pair of runs.
The Spartans are back in action Wednesday in a 6 p.m. game at William & Mary.
