WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary plated 12 runs in the first two innings en route to a 16-6 win over Norfolk State on Wednesday night in a midweek non-conference game at Plumeri Park.
The Tribe (16-7) notched four of their 13 hits in a five-run first, then took advantage of four NSU (8-13) miscues in a seven-run second inning to take the big early lead.
Justin Hayes and
Korey Singh each notched two hits for the Spartans, who scored five runs in their final two innings at bat.
All four W&M hits in the first frame were doubles. Colin Lipke drove in two with a double, and Owen Socher, Zach Pearson and Matt McDermott also hit run-scoring two-baggers in the bottom of the first.
The Spartans got a run back in the top of the second. Singh walked to start the frame and scored on a two-out double by catcher
Ty Hanchey.
But W&M pushed across seven runs thanks to two hits and four Spartan errors in the bottom of the second. Socher and Matthew Trehub contributed run-scoring singles in the inning.
The Tribe scored once in the fourth and three more times in the sixth to account for their final runs.
NSU did not go down quietly. In the eighth, Singh doubled and later scored on a passed ball.
Adam Collins, who walked, came around to score on a wild pitch.
In the ninth,
Khie Simms,
Stephen Baughan and Singh hit three straight singles. Singh's hit drove in Simms, Baughan later scored on a W&M error, and Collins reached on a fielder's choice before ultimately scoring on another Tribe miscue to cap a three-run inning.
Singh finished the night 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Hayes was 2-for-5 with a stolen base. Collins also scored a pair of runs.
NSU lefty
Kevin Alicea (1-3) was charged with the loss after yielding 12 runs, five earned, in two innings pitched. The Spartans got solid relief outings from several pitchers.
Tyler Morgan fanned three and allowed just one unearned run in three innings of work.
James Deloatch struck out two in a scoreless inning pitched, and
Jalen Rudolph and
Mike Pyers combined to strike out the side in the eighth for NSU.
Jack Cone (1-0), the second of six Tribe pitchers, earned the win with three scoreless innings pitched. Socher led the W&M offense with a 3-for-6 day.
The Spartans return to action this weekend in a three-game series at Coppin State. The Eagles (5-1) and Spartans (4-2) occupy the top two spots in the MEAC's Northern Division entering the first of their two series matchups this season.
