NSU Tops Maryland Eastern Shore 7-3 for Series Sweep

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team finished the weekend sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore after holding back the Hawks in a 7-3 win on Sunday morning at the NSU Softball Field.

The Spartans scored five runs over the first three innings and then added two more runs in the sixth after MDES had cut the lead to two. The victory bumped NSU's MEAC record to 5-1, tops in the Northern Division, and its overall record to 17-12.

The Spartans have now won five of their past six and 11 of their last 13 games dating back to early March.

The Hawks dropped to 1-4 in the league and 4-20 overall.

Junior Shelby DesChamps had a strong game at the leadoff spot, hitting 3-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI. Both of her steals came in the first two innings and were directly responsible for the early advantage.

She and senior Kylee Lopez singled in the first to put runners on the corners, and both players took off for the double steal and the early 1-0 lead. In the second, sophomore Jade Dixon hit an RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead, and later in the inning DesChamps singled and pulled off a double steal, this time at first with sophomore Jazzmaine Hammond at third.

The Spartans extended their lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the third. Three walks in the first four batters loaded the bases, and Hammond lined one past the first baseman for a two-run single.

Senior pitcher Hunter Halford finally ran into trouble in the fifth as Maryland Eastern Shore broke through. A pair of hits were followed by a sac bunt and another single for two runs in the inning. The Hawks also scored in the sixth on an RBI double to make it 5-3.

But in the sixth, Dixon doubled with one out, stole third and came home when DesChamps bounced one over the head of the first baseman. Lopez later singled through the hole between third and short to make it 7-3.

Halford (9-7) got the win after allowing six hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Lopez finished with two hits and had two stolen bases as well. NSU had six swipes in the game.

Nasya Goodman (3-11) suffered the loss for the Hawks after allowing seven hits and seven earned runs with six walks in six innings.

The Spartans travel to UMBC on Wednesday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
