ORLANDO, Fla. – Norfolk State women's tennis kicked off its spring break foray into the Sunshine State with a 7-0 loss to Penn State at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The Spartans (0-1) defaulted at No. 3 doubles and were left with no margin for error in doubles competition. The Nittany Lions (8-3) clinched the point at top-seeded doubles, where Shannon Hanley and Samantha Smith dealt
Paula Fortuno and
Joyce Fields a 6-0 defeat.
The match at No. 2 doubles went unfinished. Frederikke Svarre and Chelsea Sawyer held a 4-2 edge over
Zoe Fraser and
Bruna Goncalves.
PSU led 2-0 at the start of singles competition, thanks to a default at No. 6 singles by NSU. Gracey Hirsh made it 3-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions with her 6-0, 6-0 win over
Adriana Strode on the fifth court.
The match-clinching point came at top-seeded singles with another straight-sets victory – this one a 6-0, 6-0 result by Gabby O'Gorman over Fortuno.
Penn State continued to roll at No. 2 singles, where Svarre downed Fraser, 6-1, 6-3. PSU then moved to 6-0 with Hanley's 6-2, 6-0 decision over Goncalves on the fourth court.
Tuesday's match ended at No. 3 singles. Sawyer capped PSU's sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Fields.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow for the second of four matches in as many days when they play conference rival Bethune-Cookman.
