ORLANDO, Fla. – Norfolk State women's tennis was dealt a 4-0 loss by Bethune-Cookman at Sanlando Park in Orlando, Florida.
A default by the Spartans (0-2) at No. 3 doubles proved decisive as the two teams split the two remaining doubles flights.
Bruna Goncalves and
Zoe Fraser kept the point in play with a 6-3 win over Michelle Ncube and Karen Romero in the second-seeded match, but a 6-4 victory by Rehaana Butt and Afrika Smith over
Joyce Fields and
Paula Fortuno on the first court gave the doubles point to the Lady Wildcats (1-4).
B-CU moved ahead 2-0 thanks to a NSU default on the sixth court. Ncube then downed Fortuno at No. 1 singles – 6-3, 7-5.
The deciding point came on the fifth court, where Karen Romero earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over
Adriana Strode to clinch the match for B-CU.
Three singles flights went unfinished. On the second court, Butt and Fraser were midway through the third set. After the two split the first two sets by identical 6-3 scores, Butt led 3-1 in the unfinished third set.
The match at No. 3 singles was also into a third set upon completion of the match. Fields rallied from a 7-5 loss to Phatsimo Ruele in the first set to claim a 6-0 win in the second set but trailed 3-1 in the third.
Chalina Godbolt was leading Goncalves 6-2, 4-1 when the match ended.
NSU returns to the courts tomorrow against South Dakota.
