NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team took a pair of losses on Friday morning during the first day of the Spartan/Pirate Classic at the NSU Softball Field. Drexel posted a 10-2 win in five innings in the first game of the day, and Hofstra limited NSU to four hits in a 6-0 shutout in the next game.
Along the way, senior catcher
Kylee Lopez tied the school's career home run record with 22. She hit a two-run blast in the bottom of the third against Drexel to move into a four-way tie for the record.
The Spartans (6-10) had seven hits against the Dragons, with Lopez and sophomore
Tuli Iosefa each going 2-for-3.
The Dragons (5-6), however, had 13 hits, including three from leadoff hitter Elena Woulfe in three at bats. She drove in three runs and also scored three times.
Lopez' hit came in the third with the Spartans down 6-0. Drexel scored a run in the first and three in the third. Two of those runs came on an RBI double by Woulfe. Jenelle Ladrido hit a two-run single in the third for a 6-0 lead.
The Dragons added another run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to close out the scoring. Brooklyn Daly (4-0) pitched four innings for the win, giving up all seven hits and two earned runs.
For Hofstra (4-10), Madison Burns threw a complete game shutout, giving up four hits and walking four batters. She improved to 1-6 on the season.
Hofstra's 3-6 hitters went a combined 7-for-11 with four runs and five RBI. The Pride scored a single run in the third and then two in the fifth for a 3-0 advantage. They added a sac fly in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh on Madison McKevitt's two-run single.
NSU will host South Carolina State in the last of four games on Saturday at approximately 3:45 p.m.
