Coppin Avoids Sweep, Shuts out NSU 5-0

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State salvaged the third game of the weekend series with Norfolk State to force a tie atop the MEAC Northern Division standings, topping the Spartans 5-0 on a combined six-hit shutout on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

Starter Devin Rivera Ozuna (7-1) struck out 11 batters over 6.1 innings and Branden Redfern and Corey Treyes worked the final 2.2 innings for the Eagles (21-16, 12-6 MEAC). Justin Hayes had three hits and two steals for the Spartans (16-19, 12-6), who won their second straight weekend series by virtue of taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Eagles outhit NSU 14-6. CSU scored the game's first run in the second when Nazier McIlwain led off with a single and scored on Marcos Castillo's groundout. The Eagles plated three more in the fourth on RBI singles by Treyes and Matt Day and a squeeze bunt by Conner Walker.

The Spartans had their chances, as they stranded 12 men on base on the afternoon. Rivera Ozuna walked the bases loaded in the fourth, but got a flyout to end the threat. NSU had at least one runner on in each of the last five innings as well, but couldn't push across a run.

The Eagles got one more run in the fifth on Treyes' second RBI single.

Jonathan Mahoney (4-4) took the loss for NSU after allowing five hits and 10 runs in five innings of work. Seth Hockett and Kevin Alicea both pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Carlos Alviarez was 3-for-3 for the Eagles, while McIlwain, Day and Treyes each had a pair of base hits.

The Spartans remain at home for their next five games, starting with a non-conference game with Longwood at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
