RICHMOND, Va. – Justin Cook hit two of Richmond's four homers and drove in five runs to lead Richmond to a 11-1 win over Norfolk State in a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon at Pitt Field.
Jacob Marcus (1-1) allowed just five hits and one run while striking out eight over a complete-game effort to pick up the win for Richmond (16-9-1).
The Spiders also got homers from Anthony Forte and Tyler Plantier as they gradually pulled away from NSU (9-16). Cook hit a two-run homer in the third and a three-run shot in the sixth. Forte added a solo homer in the fifth and Plantier hit a two-run shot in a four-run Spider eighth.
The Spartans got their lone run in the sixth.
Dionte Brown led off the inning with an infield single, and he scored on Richmond transfer
Caleb Ward's RBI double.
James Deloatch (0-1), making his first start of the year for the Spartans, was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs and four hits in four innings. He struck out a season-high four batters.
Cook was 4-for-5 for Richmond. Plantier, Forte and Sage Bruhl added two hits each.
Five different Spartans accounted for the team's five hits: Ward, Brown,
Stephen Baughan,
Ty Hanchey and
Adam Collins.
The Spartans play their third straight weekend series away from home this weekend, when they travel to Delaware State for a three-game series Friday through Sunday.
