Spartans Roll Past Coppin State with 7-0 Win

BALTIMORE, Md. – Norfolk State women's tennis improved to 4-0 in MEAC Northern Division play with a 7-0 sweep of Coppin State on the CSU Tennis Courts on Saturday.

The Spartans (5-7) gained an early advantage in doubles play thanks to a default by the Lady Eagles (2-6, 1-3 MEAC) on the third court. NSU then swept the two contested doubles flights.

Paula Fortuno and Joyce Fields downed Precious Udofe and Shariah Dunwell – 6-1 – on the second court before a marathon victory by Naz Karagoz and Zoe Fraser in the top-seeded flight. Karagoz and Fraser split the first 12 points with Brittanie Cahua and Tinashe Gwaze before taking the tiebreaker, 7-1.

Karagoz and Fraser improved to 7-1 in top-flight doubles action on the year and have won their last seven decisions.

Another CSU default, this one at No. 6 singles, moved the Spartans to 2-0.

Fields earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Udofe on the fourth court, setting up Fraser's match-clinching win at No. 3 singles. Fraser downed Gwaze – 6-0, 6-1 – to give NSU the decisive fourth point.

Karagoz dominated on the first court, extending her singles win streak to six matches. The four-time conference player of the week swept Dunwell by a 6-1, 6-0 score.

At No. 2 singles, Fortuno moved past Cahua taking both sets by a 6-4 margin before a 6-1, 6-0 sweep by Bruna Goncalves on the fifth court.

NSU goes for its first undefeated conference season since 2016 on Sunday when it faces Morgan State.
