NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State head football coach
Latrell Scott announced Thursday the recent additions of
Brandon Torrey and
Aaron Corp to the Spartan coaching staff.
Torrey, who was a part of a Super Bowl championship team with the New York Giants, will serve as NSU's offensive line coach. Corp rejoins NSU as quarterbacks coach, a post he held in 2015-16.
Torrey coached the tight ends the last two seasons at Monroe College, a junior college in New York. There he mentored current Spartan
Shawn McFarland, a first-team all-conference performer last season at Monroe who signed with NSU earlier this year. Torrey also helped coach the Mustangs' special teams, leading the kickoff return unit to a No. 2 ranking in the country last year.
Prior to his stint in junior college, Torrey coached the offensive line at Howard University, his alma mater and NSU's MEAC rival. He served in a volunteer capacity in 2015 before taking the reigns as offensive line coach in 2016. During his tenure, the Howard offense produced the school's first 1,000-yard tailback in over a decade in Anthony Philyaw, who ran for 1,230 yards in 2016. Philyaw also set a school single-game record for rushing yards that season (281).
Before moving to the coaching ranks, Torrey played six years of professional football, including stints with the New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals. He was a member of the XLII Super Bowl champion Giants team which defeated the undefeated New England Patriots en route to the championship following the 2007 season.
A native of Durham, North Carolina, Torrey played his college football at Howard, where he was a force on the offensive line. He set the school record for most consecutive starts, seeing time at guard and tackle. He was a first-team All-MEAC performer and second-team All-American in 2004.
"We've very excited to have Brandon join our staff," Scott said. "He has MEAC experience as a player and coach. His teaching style and ability to relate to our players will pay huge dividends."
Corp returns to NSU to a post he held from 2015-16, Scott's first two years as NSU head coach. For the past two seasons, Corp has served as quarterbacks coach at the University of Richmond, his alma mater. In his first season at UR, the Spiders led the CAA in passing, averaging 341 yards per game. UR quarterback Kyle Lauletta was named CAA Offensive Player of the Year, was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award and was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.
With new personnel at QB, the Spiders still ranked second in the CAA in passing in 2018, averaging 264.2 yards per game.
"It's exciting to have Aaron rejoin our program. He gained valuable experience while he was gone," Scott said. "He knows our offense inside and out, and will be able to add new ideas. The quarterback room will be much improved with Aaron guiding them moving forward."
Corp was a key piece of Scott's first coaching staff at NSU. Corp helped develop former Spartan signal-caller Greg Hankerson into one of the more dangerous offensive players in the MEAC in 2015 and 2016. In just two seasons, Hankerson graduated No. 3 in school history in total offense after leading the Spartans in rushing and passing both years.
Corp came to NSU after serving as quarterbacks coach under Scott at Virginia State in 2014. The Trojans finished 10-3 overall en route to the CIAA championship that year.
Corp played three seasons at the University of South California (2007-09) before transferring to Richmond for his final two seasons (2010-11). Corp passed for 2,682 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior. He set an NCAA FCS single-game record for completion percentage (31-of-34, 91.2 percent) against Towson.
Corp had brief pro stints with the NFL's Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins before beginning his coaching career.
