NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State volleyball program announced today it has added five players to complete the 2019 recruiting class. High school players
Myleah Carter,
Simone Daniels and
Siera Jones, Chowan transfer
Breona Young and junior college transfer
Julisa Carrizosa will join the Spartans for the upcoming season.
Carrizosa is a 5-foot-9 outside hitter from Phoenix College and a native of Laveen, Arizona. Carter hails from Lexington, Kentucky is a 5-5 libero/defensive specialist from Henry Clay High School. Daniels is a 6-0 middle blocker from Coppell High School and an Irving, Texas native. All three signed national letters of intent.
Young is a 5-10 middle blocker who spent her freshman year in 2018 at Chowan. Jones hails from Bridgeville, Delaware, and is a 5-6 libero/defensive specialist from Delmarva Christian High School.
Julisa Carrizosa
Carrizosa did not play in 2018 but was a two-time National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II All-Region 1 first-team honoree at Phoenix College. She tallied 4.31 kills and 3.94 digs per set her sophomore season in 2017, including highs of 32 kills and 28 digs in two different matches that year. She was also a two-time All-ACCAC (Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) second-team honoree, including her freshman year in 2016 when she averaged 3.35 kills and 3.70 digs per set.
While competing for Greenway High School as a senior in 2015, Carrizosa led the team to the Arizona Division 3 state championship and a 40-1 record on the way to being named the Small Schools Player of the Year by
AZ Central. She also won Division 4 state title as a sophomore in 2013 with Northwest Christian School and was a three-time all-state player. She will have two years of eligibility left with the Spartans.
Myleah Carter
Carter was a member of Henry Clay's volleyball team her first three years, leading the program to a state runner-up finish in 2016 during her sophomore year and a state tournament appearance as a freshman. Her school won the district championship her freshman, sophomore and junior years, as well as the regional championship her first two years before a runner-up finish as a junior.
Carter also played for KiVa 18 White, leading the AAU program to the Premier Championship at the Showdown in the Smokies tournament. She was an Academic Honor Roll student at Henry Clay.
Simone Daniels
Daniels attended Coppell High School in Texas, where she went from the MVP of the freshman A team to the Most Valuable Offensive Player on the varsity team as a sophomore. She has also competed for the Untouchables Volleyball Club, including most recently with the 18-Diamonds.
Breona Young
Young led Chowan with 0.75 blocks per set last year while also adding 1.60 kills. She started 24 of 28 matches for the Hawks on the way to being named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team. A native of Charlotte, she helped lead Chowan to an 11-6 conference record and to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
She played volleyball for Mallard Creek High School while attending Northwest School of the Arts. She was twice named All-4A Conference and was tabbed the league's MVP as a junior. She led the conference in blocks her senior year. Young was a member of the Honor's College at Chowan and was named to the Dean's List.
Siera Jones
Jones was named to the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) Player of the Year as a senior at Delmarva Christian. She earned all-conference honors that year for both volleyball and softball. She played three years of varsity volleyball, leading the Royals to three straight ESIAC championships.
She also played four years of varsity softball, earning all-conference accolades as a sophomore and junior in addition to her senior year. Jones also played JV basketball for one year and was a member of the Premier Volleyball of Delaware AAU team from 2014-19.
The Spartans went 4-17 last year, 3-7 in the MEAC. The team did not lose a single senior off last year's team and will welcome up to 20 players in August for preseason camp.
