Bolozan Leads White to 3-1 Win over Green

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State volleyball team held its annual Green vs. Gold Scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at Gill Gymnasium. The intrasquad scrimmage ended with team White earning a 3-1 win over team Green.

White won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-17. Green did not go down without a fight, pulling ahead early in set 3 and then holding on for a 29-27 win. White ended the scrimmage with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set.

Perhaps the biggest star of the day was senior Bojana Bolozan. She led White with 19 kills and five blocks. On the other side, sophomore Kyra Walden tallied 11 kills with two service aces for Green, while junior teammate Quiana Griffin added nine kills, two blocks and two aces.

Bolozan helped White get off the ground in the early going. Green held the lead momentarily in the first set after a few errors from White. But the latter eventually scored 10 of the last 12 points of the opening set for the lead.

White kept it going with a 7-1 lead in set 2, with Bolozan and junior Taylor Eichelberger leading the way. A couple of kills from senior Anna Rupertova helped White go ahead by 10. Green got as close as five on back-to-back aces from senior Daiysa Burrell.

Green also won the first six points of the third set, but the lead quickly evaporated. Walden started landing kills and aces as Green went ahead by as much as six. Up 23-17 after a kill from junior Jazmine Craig, Green committed a few attack errors to allow White to get back in. Those coupled with kills from Bolozan and junior Julisa Carrizosa forced extra points.

Walden and freshman Simone Daniels landed back-to-back kills, and an ace from Griffin right after turned a 27-26 deficit into a two-point win for Green.

But Bolozan and Carrizosa pushed White ahead in the fourth. A kill from sophomore Makenzy Johnson gave White a 13-7 edge, and she had two other kills and two aces later on as White went ahead by as much as eight. Two more kills from Bolozan made it a 10-point advantage, and she ended the match with one last kill.

Carrizosa had eight kills and three aces, Rupertova contributed seven kills, and Eichelberger totaled six kills and three blocks. Johnson, the team's primary setter, also added five kills and three aces.

Burrell and Daniels each had five kills for Green. Sophomore Breona Young finished with a team-leading three blocks.

The Spartans host ODU for an exhibition at Gill Gym on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The regular season starts next weekend against Hampton in the Battle of the Bay. NSU plays at HU on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a Saturday match at Gill Gym at 1 p.m.
