NSU to Become 1st HBCU to Host a D-I NCAA National Track Championship Meet

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The NCAA announced Wednesday that Norfolk State University and the City of Virginia Beach have been selected to host four NCAA Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship meets between 2023 and 2026.

The brand new Virginia Beach Sports Center will host the 2023 and 2026 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, the 2024 Division III Indoor Championships, and the 2025 Division I Indoor Championships. NSU will serve as the host institution for an NCAA Championship event for the first time and will be the first HBCU to host an NCAA Division I national championship track event.

"NSU is honored to be chosen as the host for the track and field national championships," said Melody Webb, NSU Director of Athletics. "The strategic partnership with the Virginia Beach Sports Center to submit a bid was a group effort by everyone involved. The NCAA Championships will be an incredible addition to the Hampton Roads community."

"This is a tremendous honor for NSU Athletics and our track and field program to partner with a great city and host this event," said Director of Track & Field Programs Kenneth Giles, who has led the Spartans to 29 MEAC championships since coming to NSU in 1999. "It's unprecedented for us. I want to thank Dani Timm and her team in Virginia Beach for their help in making this happen. The facility is phenomenal and will attract many great events like this in the future."

The Virginia Beach Sports Center opened earlier this month. The 285,000-square foot facility is located across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center and features a state-of-the-art indoor hydraulic track with seating for up to 5,000 spectators.

"The City of Virginia Beach is proud to be selected as the host site for four NCAA championship events. These events are the pinnacle in the sport of indoor track and field. Our world-class venue, the Virginia Beach Sports Center, and our championship city are ready to welcome the student-athletes, coaches, families and fans. When we built this facility, we had our sights set on hosting this event, and we are so excited," said Nancy Helman, Director of Sports Marketing for Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau.
