Spartans Return from Hiatus, Host William & Mary Sunday

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State women's basketball team (1-2) plays its first game in 19 days when the Spartans take on William & Mary (2-2) on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Echols Hall.

The game is the last scheduled contest for NSU before the new year. NSU has had games with Robert Morris, Wake Forest, Hampton and Richmond canceled or postponed in the last two weeks.

Last Time Out
Liberty outscored NSU 42-16 in the middle two quarters to pull away for a 76-53 win over the Spartans on Tuesday, Dec. 1 in Lynchburg. The Flames shot 58 percent in the second half to earn their second straight win over NSU. Jalynn Holmes scored 15 points and Mangela Ngandjui had 10 and seven rebounds for NSU, which shot a season-low 24.6 percent from the floor.

Scouting William & Mary
The Tribe evened its record at 2-2 with a 48-43 road win at George Mason on Wednesday. Sydney Wagner scored a career-high 27 points for the Tribe, which held GMU to 27.8 percent shooting, including 1-of-16 from 3-point range. Wagner is averaging a team-best 19.5 points per game for W&M, more than one-third of the Tribe's 52.5 average. W&M is holding opponents to just 59 points per game so far this year.

South of the Border
The ever-changing landscape of college basketball this year has had an effect on NSU's schedule. In addition to having four games postponed or canceled so far, NSU's MEAC schedule has also seen changes since the year started. The MEAC decided to split into divisions this year in order to cut down on travel time, and NSU was pegged to competed in the Northern Division. In fact, the Spartans were voted the preseason favorite to win the North.

However, since that time, three MEAC schools have opted not to compete in women's basketball: Maryland Eastern Shore, Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M. Since two of these were Southern Division schools, the MEAC decided to move NSU to the South to offset the imbalance. NSU will now play just a 12-game MEAC schedule, four games against each of the other three Southern Division teams - North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State.

Series/Last Meeting vs. William & Mary
William & Mary leads the all-time series against the Spartans 15-8. NSU won the first six meetings and seven of the first eight, then the Tribe won 12 straight before the Spartans' 80-74 overtime win during the 2017-18 season. W&M has taken the last two matchups. This year marks the sixth straight season in which the teams will face one another. The Tribe won 65-56 in last year's matchup in Williamsburg behind 19 points from Eva Hodgson and 14 points and nine rebounds from Gabby Rogers. Chanette Hicks had 16 and Blaire Thomas 13 for NSU.
