Battle of the Bay Set for Monday at Echols Hall

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. - Coming off a home contest against a 757 opponent, the Norfolk State men's basketball team will turn around and host an even bigger 757 rival on Monday when the Spartans get set to take on Hampton in the Battle of the Bay. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.

NSU carries a 2-1 record into the game after defeats of James Madison and Radford to start the year before a setback at home to ODU on Wednesday.

Media Coverage
The game will be broadcast live through NSU's website. Fans can follow along with the live stats.

Ross Gordon and Woube Gebre will call the game on WNSB Blazin' Hot 91.1 FM. The audio feed is available through www.TuneIn.com or the TuneIn Radio App (search for "WNSB").

Series History
This will mark the 24th year in a row the teams will meet at least once. In fact, except for two seasons from 1995-97, they have played at least once a year since the series began in 1958-59.

Hampton took last year's game at HU, 64-53, after the Spartans won in double overtime at home the year before. Norfolk State still leads the all-time series by an 86-49 margin. The series is in HU's favor, 27-23, since both teams moved up to Division I. NSU has had more meetings with Hampton (135) than any other opponent. The next closest are Elizabeth City State and Virginia Union. NSU has played them 104 times each.

Scouting the Opponent
The Pirates began their season on Tuesday by knocking off George Washington on the road, 82-78. Like NSU, Hampton was scheduled to face William & Mary, but their game set for Thursday was cancelled due to a positive COVID-19 test in William & Mary's program. Davion Warren led HU in its upset of George Washington with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Shelton and Edward Oliver-Hampton contributed 19 and 18 points, respectively, in HU's only game so far this year.

Last Time Out
NSU trailed by just one with less than six minutes to go, but Old Dominion outscored the Spartans 18-5 the rest of the way in an 80-64 win on Wednesday at Echols Hall. The Monarchs had quick starts to both the first and second halves to help pull out the win. Daryl Anderson led the way for NSU with 17 points thanks to four 3-pointers. Devante Carter added 15 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Quick Hits
 • The game against ODU marked the first time the Spartans hosted the Monarchs since March 8, 1969, and just the second time ever. The other 18 games have been played either at ODU or at Norfolk Scope Arena.
 • Only twice in their Division I history have the Spartans started the year 2-0 with wins over D-I opponents: this year with wins over James Madison and Radford, and in 1998-99 with victories over McNeese State and Georgia State.
 • 1998-99 was also the last year the Spartans last played Radford, part of a home-and-home series against the Highlanders in NSU's first two years in Division I. NSU defeated James Madison for the second straight game after also defeating the Dukes in overtime in 2014-15.
 • This year was the first time NSU defeated two in-state D-I opponents (JMU, Radford) in the same season (not including Hampton) since the Spartans moved to D-I in 1997-98.

Fan Attendance Update
Through non-conference play, NSU will not have fans in the stands. Echols Hall will be restricted to the team travel parties, essential personnel, media and a limited number of family members due to Governor Ralph Northam's Amendment to the Executive Order 67 that limited attendees at sports venues to 250 people.

The Norfolk State Athletics Department will sell season streaming packages through its website on Spartan Showcase Video Streaming for $50, covering both men's and women's home games. Fans can also purchase cutouts through the NSU Ticket Office for $50 that will be displayed throughout the arena.
