Women's DMR Romps to Win at MEAC Indoor Championship

LANDOVER, Md. – The Norfolk State women's distance medley relay team highlighted the second day of action at the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships by lapping the field by nearly 30 seconds en route to a gold medal on Friday evening at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

The quartet of Fridah Koech, Malika Pride, Kara Grant and Martha Bissah clocked a time of 11 minutes, 53.32 seconds, some 29.53 seconds ahead of runner-up Morgan State.

That event helped the Spartans in third place in the team standings with 31 points. Bethune-Cookman leads with 45 points and North Carolina A&T is in second with 39.

The Spartans also got points toward their team total in the field events and multi-events on Friday. Sophomore Arieana Parker placed fourth in the weight throw with a top toss of 56 feet, 1.25 inches. Freshman Shirelle Linzy notched a sixth-place showing in the pentathlon with 2,289 points.

Three Spartans sprinters also advanced through Friday's semifinal heats in their respective races. Junior Kiara Grant won her heat in the 60 meters and was the second-fastest qualifier overall with a time of 7.38 seconds. DaJah Parker-Love also advanced to Saturday's final in the 60 with a time of 7.61 seconds.

Pride ran well in her semifinal in the 400 meters, winning the heat in 54.40 seconds. She was the second-fastest qualifier.

Saturday's action will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's pole vault. The first running event will be the women's mile at 12:30 p.m.
