NORFOLK, Va. – Senior
Steven Whitley of the Norfolk State men's basketball team is one of 10 MEAC players on the watch list for the 2020 Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship, the organization announced today.
The midseason watch list features 10 seniors from each of the 32 NCAA Division I conferences. The tournament will include four players from each conference – one substitute per team – and 128 players in total. They will compete for a $100,000 top prize at the third annual event. This year's 3X3 tournament will run from April 3-5 at Atlantic Station in Atlanta.
The FIBA sanctioned event, run by Intersport, will hand out $150,000 in total, including for each win in pool play. All games during pool play from April 3-4, and the round of 16 and quarterfinal games on April 5, will be carried live on Twitter. ESPN2 will broadcast the semifinal, consolation and championship contests on April 5.
Joining Whitley on the watch list for the MEAC are Jibri Blount and Randy Miller of North Carolina Central, Isaiah Bailey and Cletrell Pope of Bethune-Cookman, Damani Applewhite of South Carolina State, Delaware State's John Crosby, Morgan State's Stanley Davis, Kamar McKnight of Coppin State, and Charles Williams of Howard.
The 3x3 tournament features one basket on a single half court. Each make from beyond the arc is worth two points, and a basket from inside the arc is worth one. The winner is the first squad to reach 21 points, or the team with the best score after 10 minutes.
The 3X3 tournament championship team will earn an automatic berth to the 2020 USA Basketball 3x3 Open National Championship in May.
