RICHMOND, Ky. – Host Eastern Kentucky scored five times in the third inning and six more in the fifth to come away with a 14-2 win over Norfolk State in the teams' series opener at Earle Combs Field on Friday night.
Mason Velasquez doubled and hit his first homer of the season for the Spartans (2-10).
A.J. Lewis hit a two-run single and Daniel Harris IV added a solo homer in the third inning. Harris tacked on an RBI single in the fifth-inning uprising for the Colonels (9-2).
Velasquez doubled in the fourth and homered in the sixth for the Spartans. He extended his hitting streak to eight games and notched his fourth multi-hit game of the season for NSU.
NSU's other run came in the eighth via a pinch-hit RBI single by
Khie Simms, scoring
Stephen Baughan, who had singled earlier in the frame.
James Deloatch (0-2) was charged with the loss. He yielded six runs, five earned, in 2.1 innings pitched. Brennan Kelly (1-0) was the winning pitcher after allowing just one run in six innings.
Lewis and Harris both drove in four runs each for EKU.
The Spartans face Eastern Kentucky at 1 p.m. Saturday and the University of Kentucky later Saturday night at 6 p.m.
