NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman pitcher
Alexis Robinson scattered six hits in a complete game effort as the Norfolk State softball team split a pair of games with Drexel on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
Robinson struck out five and pitched all seven innings as NSU wrapped up the last day of the Pirate Invitational with a 1-0 win over the Dragons. That came on the heels of a 10-0 loss to Drexel in the game prior in which Brooklyn Daly threw a five-inning no-hitter against the Spartans.
Norfolk State (6-12) finished with just four hits in the second game, but Robinson did enough to make a second-inning run stand up. Freshman
Raven Blair and junior
Jazzmaine Hammond hit back-to-back doubles that inning for the only run of the game, and half of the team's hits on the day. Hammond also hit a single later in the contest for a 2-for-2 performance.
Drexel (4-6) had a hit in every inning in game 2 but the fifth. Unfortunately for Devon Grippe (2-1), she took the loss for the Dragons after scattering four hits in six innings of work. Robinson improved to 3-2 on the season.
The Dragons used a seven-run fifth to win the first game in five innings via the eight-run rule. They got six of their 11 hits in that final frame, and they scored those 10 runs without the benefit of an extra-base hit.
Daly (1-3) struck out four and walked one in a no-hit performance. NSU only had two runners on base, and both came in the fourth when senior
Shelby DesChamps walked and sophomore
Gabby Vaughan reached on an error.
Four of the 10 runs allowed by the Spartans were unearned.
NSU will head to North Carolina State for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
