NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State University women's track athletes
Martha Bissah and
Kiara Grant were named this week as Division I indoor All-Americans by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Though the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships were canceled on the eve of the meet due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the USTFCCCA opted to still name All-Americans for the 2020 indoor season. As a result, all 2020 NCAA Indoor Championship qualifiers earn All-America honors. Typically, championship participants are named first team, second team or honorable mention based on their finish at the championship.
Bissah earned All-America accolades for the fourth time in her career in the 800 meters. She ran a season-best time of 2 minutes, 5.38 seconds at the Penn State Open in February to qualify for the indoor nationals. She went on to win her fourth straight MEAC title in the event in February.
Previously, Bissah earned first-team All-America honors as junior at the 2019 indoor championship and as a sophomore during the 2018 outdoor season. She was a second-team All-America selection at the 2019 indoor championship.
Grant earned All-America honors in both the 60 and 200 meters as she qualified for a national championship in two events for the first time. Grant improved upon her own school record in the 60 meters with her top time of 7.20 seconds at the Penn State Open before defending her MEAC title in that event later in February. Grant qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200 with her personal-record time of 23.25 seconds at the Great Dane Classic in January.
For Grant, this marks the third straight NCAA meet in which she has earned All-America honors. As a sophomore, she garnered second-team indoor All-America honors in the 60 meters in 2019. Later that year, she was a first-team outdoor All-American in the 100 meters.
Bissah and Grant are the only track athletes in NSU history to earn All-America honors at more than two Division I championship events.
