NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State University women's basketball team (1-3, 0-0 MEAC) once again attempts to open its MEAC slate this weekend when the Spartans hit the road for a pair of 2 p.m. tipoffs at North Carolina A&T (4-1, 0-0) on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game will be streamed on FloHoops and both games will be broadcast on WNSB 91.1 FM.
The Spartans will be playing their first games since Dec. 20.
Last Time Out
Sydney Wagner scored a career-high 29 points to lead William & Mary to a 55-44 win over Norfolk State on Sunday, Dec. 20 at Echols Hall in the Spartans' most recent game. Wagner hit 9-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-12 from 3-point range for the Tribe. The Spartans (1-3), playing their first game since Dec. 1, were led by 11 points from
E'Lexus Davis and 10 from
Mangela Ngandjui.
W&M closed the third quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 50-41 lead into the fourth quarter. NSU couldn't get closer than eight the rest of the way. NSU shot just 34 percent from the floor.
Scouting N.C. A&T
The Aggies are off to a 4-1 start after sweeping their first conference weekend series from South Carolina State last weekend in Orangeburg. S.C. The Aggies won 78-39 Saturday and 97-54 on Sunday and have now won four in a row.
N.C. A&T has four players averaging in double figures, led by Deja Winters at 15.4 points per game. Freshman D'Mya Tucker averages 14.4. A&T is yielding just 48.4 points per game. The Aggies went 19-11 last year, 11-5 in MEAC play.
NCCU Games Rescheduled
NSU had its Jan. 2-3 conference games against North Carolina Central rescheduled for Jan. 23-24 due to NSU's COVID-19 protocols. Six of the Spartans' first 10 scheduled games were either postponed or canceled due to COVID issues with one of the two teams involved. NSU has played just one game since Dec. 1, a 55-44 home loss to William & Mary on Dec. 20.
Gregory, Strickland-Gills Join NSU
NSU will gain the services this semester of two post players. Sophomore Central MIchigan transfer
Shine Strickland-Gills is now eligible following the NCAA's December ruling allowing Division I transfers immediate eligibility. She played in 14 games for CMU last year as a freshman
In addition, local standout
Tinesha Gregory enrolled at NSU in December and is expected to suit up for the Spartans. She was a standout at Salem High School in Virginia Beach last year under
Kevin Harris, NSU's director of operations who coached Salem last year. Gregory was a first-team All-Beach District member last year.
Series/Last Meeting vs. N.C. A&T
North Carolina A&T leads the all-time series with NSU, 20-18. The Aggies have won three of the last four in the series and won the teams' only meeting last year, a 53-39 decision over NSU in Greensboro on Feb. 1, 2020. Jayla Jones-Pack led N.C. A&T with 14 points, and the Aggies held NSU to 29.6 percent shooting in that matchup.
