Eagles Earn Season Split with NSU, Top Spartans 3-1

BALTIMORE, Md. – Host Coppin State avenged its earlier loss to Norfolk State, earning a split of the teams' season series with a 3-1 win (25-20, 29-31, 25-17, 25-17) over the Spartans on Friday night at the PEC Arena.

The Eagles (13-9, 7-3 MEAC) hit .190 for the match while holding the Spartans (7-14, 3-7) to a .067 mark.

CSU scored the first four points of the match. NSU closed to within 10-9 after a kill by Shonte Seale, who posted a team-high 14 kills on the night. But the Eagles scored the next five points to pull away, and they didn't trail in taking the first set.

There were 17 ties and 10 lead-changes in a highly competitive second set. CSU led midway through, 14-8, before the Spartans answered with a 7-0 run. Middle blocker Paola Maradei had three aces to key the spurt. Rachel Williams and Paola Matos added kills to help NSU pull ahead by one.

Later in the set, NSU held a 24-20 lead after another kill by Seale. But the Eagles rallied with five straight points, three thanks to kills by Paola Caten. CSU then held three set points, but the Spartans staved off each one. With the match tied at 29, CSU committed back-to-back errors as the Spartans evened the match.

Sets three and four belonged to Coppin State, however. The Eagles never trailed in the third set, taking a 2-1 lead as they hit .273, their best mark in the match. NSU committed eight errors in the set.

The Spartans started off well in set four as Williams and Seale both put down kills to help NSU out to a 6-4 advantage. But the Eagles answered with a 10-3 run to take control of the set and NSU could not get within three points thereafter.

Seale paced NSU with 14 kills, and she added seven digs as well. Williams registered a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs. Maradei tallied season highs of five total blocks and four aces.

Caris Cross handed out 32 assists and Nicole Rodriguez again topped the 20-dig mark, finishing with 24.

Caten posted a match-high 18 kills and Miajavon Coleman 16 for the Eagles.

NSU remains in Baltimore to face Morgan State in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
