BALTIMORE, Md. – Host Morgan State hit a blistering .412 for the match to top Norfolk State 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
The Bears (5-20, 3-8 MEAC) committed just eight errors while tallying 48 kills to even the season series with the Spartans (7-15, 3-8).
MSU broke away from NSU in a close first set with a 9-2 run that turned an 11-10 Bears' lead into a 20-13 advantage. Makila Billingsley had five kills in the set for the Bears, who hit .419 compared to .147 for NSU.
The second set included nine ties and four lead-changes. NSU's
Paola Matos put down six of her team-high 10 kills in the set. A Matos kill and an ace by
Shonte Seale gave NSU a 22-19 lead. But the Bears scored three straight points, and there were ties at 22, 23, 24 and 25-all as the set went to extra points.
Taylor Eichelberger's kill tied the set up at 25, but the Bears got a kill by Gabriela Hiciano and an NSU error to close out the set.
The Bears used a 12-2 spurt early in the third set to pull away en route to the three-set win.
Hiciano led all players with 14 kills for MSU. Madison Grace added 12 and Billingsley 10.
Matos had 10 kills and only one error on just 16 swings, hitting .562 for the match. She also had two aces. Seale tallied nine kills,
Rachel Williams five and both
Paola Maradei and
Gracie Teeter four apiece.
Caris Cross finished with 31 assists and
Nicole Rodriguez led in digs, with 11.
The Spartans are home for their final three regular-season matches, beginning with a 6 p.m. match Friday against South Carolina State at Gill Gymnasium.
