VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Anthony Franklin and
Antaeveon Payne both registered personal records and finished as the top collegiate finisher in their respective events as the Norfolk State men's track and field team kicked off the first day of the inaugural
Kenneth Giles Norfolk State Invitational on Friday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Franklin was runner-up in the 60-meter dash in a personal-best time of 6.74 seconds, placing second behind only former Division I All-American Joseph Amoah. Similarly, Payne took second in the 60-meter hurdles in a PR of 8.22 seconds. He was behind only another former D-I All-American Trey Holloway.
Payne was one of four Spartans who qualified for the 60m hurdles final.
Camren Wynder-Hill finished fourth (8.43),
Joseph Abiakam fifth (8.55) and
Joshua Sutton eighth (9.26).
NSU also got a runner-up finish in the 3,000 meters from senior
Lelei Too. He was just edged at the finish line and posted a time of 9:16.34.
NSU's lone competitor Friday in the field events was freshman
Nile Walker. He finished fourth in the triple jump with a top mark of 45 feet, 6.5 inches.
Competitions resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the heptathlon.
