Parker's School Record Leads 5 First-Place Finishes for Spartan Women Friday

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Junior Arieana Parker smashed her own school record in the weight throw, and Kiara Grant, Indya Richards, Fridah Koech and Kylis Gilmore also posted victories Friday as the Spartan women's track and field team opened up the inaugural Kenneth Giles Norfolk State Invitational in style at the Virginia Beach Sports Center

For the second time this month, Parker broke her own school mark in the weight throw. Eleven days after posting a mark of 57 feet, 5 inches at the Virginia Beach Invitational, Parker smashed her personal best again. Her next-to-last throw Friday traveled 59 feet, 7.25 inches in winning the event on Friday.

Grant's undefeated streak in the 60 meters reached six straight meets dating to last season as she cruised to a winning time of 7.25 seconds. Two of her teammates also made the final and set personal records. DaJah Parker-Love was runner-up in 7.37 seconds, and freshman Dahja Price placed seventh in 7.73.

Redshirt freshman Indya Richards also PRed Friday in her win in the 60 meter hurdles. She posted an 8.64 in the semis and an 8.67 in the final. Price also placed fourth in the hurdles, as well.

NSU's other track victory came via Koech in the 3,000 meters. The junior crossed the line in 10:46.50, just ahead of teammate Faith Jemutai, who was second in 10:47.54.

Elsewhere in the field, Gilmore won the pole vault with a top height of 9 feet, 6 inches.

Competition resumes Saturday at noon.
