Spartan Baseball Takes to Road Saturday, Returns to NSU Sunday to Face NCCU

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team takes its first true road trip of the year this weekend as the Spartans kick off a streak of six straight games against North Carolina Central.

The teams will play a pair of non-traditional three-game series the next two weekends. This weekend features a doubleheader at North Carolina Central on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., and a single game Sunday at NSU's Marty L. Miller Field starting at 2 p.m. for the Spartans' home opener.

Next weekend, the order flips, with the squads playing a doubleheader at NSU on Saturday, March 6, and a single game at NCCU on Sunday, March 7.

NSU is 0-4 following four defeats at Old Dominion in the past week. Offensively, the Spartans are being led by a pair of preseason All-MEAC picks in second baseman Alsander Womack and first baseman Mason Velasquez. Womack has a team-best five hits and five RBIs and is hitting .313 thus far. Velasquez is pacing the squad with a .364 average. Half of his hits have gone for extra bases.

Junior Justin Walton and senior Danny Hosley have been two of the bright spots for the pitching staff. Both have pitched three scoreless innings so far in their only appearances, and freshman Nolan Manzer also has a two-inning scoreless outing to his credit.

NCCU is 3-1 thus far. The Eagles swept Army by scores of 9-4, 8-1 and 5-4, then dropped a 22-14 slugfest at Longwood on Tuesday. Luis DeLeon has nine runs batted in during the four games, and he (.417) and Cameron Norgren (.429) lead the team in average.
