Hornets Defeat NSU in Monday Afternoon Match, 3-0

DOVER, Del. – Delaware State had a solid afternoon on offense in earning a 3-0 win over the Norfolk State volleyball team on Monday at DSU's Memorial Hall.
 
The Hornets hit .315 and piled up 40 kills to complete the home-and-home sweep of the Spartans over the past week. NSU fell to 1-3 on the season after losing 25-15, 25-16 and 25-19 on Monday.
 
Senior Taylor Eichelberger led the Spartan with six kills as the NSU offense hit .087. Junior Nicole Rodriguez finished with a match-high 13 digs.
 
After winning last Thursday's contest 3-1 at NSU's Joseph Echols Hall and then again on Monday, the Hornets improved to 3-1. Valeria Otero led all players with 10 kills, and Mayah Ngundam added nine kills.
 
A block from Eichelberger got the Spartans to within two early in the first set, 11-9, but the Hornets later scored five in a row to stretch their lead to seven. A kill from Otero and an error on NSU gave DSU a 10-point win in the opening set.
 
Kills from freshman Jaida Bynum and junior Heliceliz Rivera, along with several errors on DSU, helped the Spartans tie the second set at 7-7. The Hornets scored the next three points and later three in a row again for a five point edge. A bigger 5-0 run near the end of the set pushed the lead to double digits before the final nine-point margin.
 
Kills from junior Paola Maradei and senior Rachel Williams tied the score at 6-6 in the third, and Maradei also had a service aces as NSU went ahead by a 9-8 edge. DSU scored the next five points and later pushed their advantage to five, 18-13.
 
The Hornets had to call timeout as NSU scored four straight to get to within one, 18-17. An ace from Bynum right before the timeout was followed by five straight points again from the Hornets. A kill from Sydney Lewis closed out the win for DSU.
 
The Hornets held an 11-4 edge in aces for the match.
 
The Spartans will begin MEAC play on Thursday with the first of two matches over two days at North Carolina A&T.
