RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond won every match on Sunday afternoon at Westhampton Courts, handing the Norfolk State women's tennis team a 7-0 loss.
The Spiders won in straight sets in all six singles matches while winning handily in doubles. They dropped NSU to 2-4 on the year, while Richmond improved to 1-2.
"Today was not our day," said head coach
Larry Holmes. "We came out flat and it showed. Credit Richmond for playing well and out-competing us."
Freshman
Laura Ruiz came closest to winning a set, as she lost 7-6 in the first set at No. 4 singles to Sara Salemyr. After dropping a 7-3 tiebreaker in that opening set, Ruiz fell 6-0 in the second set.
Senior
Paula Fortuno fell 6-2, 6-1 to Emily Dunbar at No. 1 singles, and freshman
Andrea Barcenas came up short to Dessi Zlateva at the second position, 6-1, 6-1. Another senior,
Zoe Fraser, dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Andrea Campodonico at the third slot.
Senior
Bruna Goncalves lost her No. 5 match to Helene Heiberg, 6-0 and then 1-0 before retiring. Freshman
Lydia Oviedo was no match for Carly Cohen at the sixth position, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Dunbar and Zlateva dropped Fraser and Goncalves at the top spot, 6-1, while Salemyr and Campodonico defeated Fortuno and Ruiz, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles. It was a 6-2 decision at the third position in favor of Heiberg and Cohen over Barcenas and Oviedo.
NSU will next play at Longwood on Friday at 2 p.m. before returning home next Saturday to host Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Complex.
