NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team plays its final non-conference weekend series of the season this weekend when Morehead State comes to Marty L. Miller Field for a four-game series.
Due to inclement weather, the teams will play their four games over two days. Noon doubleheaders are slated for both Saturday and Sunday. There will be no game Friday.
Scouting the Spartans
NSU (3-10) snapped a five-game losing streak last Sunday with a 2-1 win over Longwood in the second game of a doubleheader at Marty L. Miller Field. MEAC Pitcher of the Week
Danny Hosley allowed just three hits over a seven-inning complete game to pick up his first career win. Catcher
Adam Collins hit a two-out RBI infield single for the go-ahead run in the sixth. Collins,
Dionte Brown and
Mason Velasquez all had two hits in the game.
Brown is the Spartans' hottest hitter as of late. He is hitting .478 over his last six games. At .438 for the season, Brown would rank among the MEAC leaders with a few more plate appearances. His eight stolen bases are most among MEAC players.
Korey Singh, who homered in last Sunday's game one loss, has all three of his home runs in the last six games. Infielders
Alsander Womack and
Mason Velasquez both rank among the top 10 in batting and on-base percentages. Womack is tied for the MEAC lead with 14 runs scored.
Scouting the Eagles
Morehead State is 7-9 on the year, but has won seven of its last 11 games after an 0-5 start. Including among those wins was a 5-2 victory over No. 1 Louisville on March 2. The Eagles, however, lost a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday at West Virginia by scores of 7-1 and 4-2.
Ryley Preece (.375) and Jackson Feltner (.349) are the Eagles' top hitters so far this year. Morehead State has slugged 13 homers already this season, four by Jack Gardner.
Cory Conway has been MSU's top arm thus far, sporting a 2-1 record with a team-high 24 strikeouts in 17.2 innings.
