NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and
Danny Hosley threw his second complete game in a row to lead Norfolk State to a 4-2 win over Morehead State in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader at Marty L. Miller Field, giving the Spartans a split of the afternoon's games.
The Eagles pulled away in game one with a six-run fifth to pick up a 10-2 win.
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth in game two, NSU (4-13) pieced together a four-run frame to take control, all with two outs. Eagle (10-10) reliever Grant Herron retired the first two batters of the frame before
Dionte Brown reached on an infield single to start the rally.
Alsander Womack drew a walk and
Ty Hanchey reached on another infield hit to load the bases.
Mason Velasquez and
Jacob Council then worked consecutive walks to force in a pair of runs to give the Spartans their first lead.
Minjae Hong followed with a two-run single to cap the rally.
Down to their last out, the Eagles' Logan Goodnight hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh and Cole Becker reached on an infield hit. But right hander
Danny Hosley struck out Bryce Hensor looking to finish off his second straight complete game.
Hosley (2-1) allowed seven hits and two runs and did not walk a batter while striking out a season-high seven hitters.
Five different Spartans accounted for the team's five hits in game two.
In the opening game Sunday, Morehead State scored six runs in the fifth to break open a 1-1 game and pick up its third victory in the weekend series.
Jack Gardner got the scoring for the Eagles with an RBI double in the top of the first, but NSU knotted the score in the third. He walked and stole second base, then scored on a two-out MSU error.
But the Eagles struck for six in the fifth. Gardner and Arthur Sells both singled in a pair of runs and the Eagles capitalized on two NSU defensive miscues to surge in front 7-1.
The Spartans tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth as Rodriguez, Brown and Womack hit three straight singles to load the bases.
Ty Hanchey drove in Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly, but MSU starter Matt Bettio (1-2) escaped without any further damage.
Both teams had seven hits in game one. Brown went 2-for-4 for the Spartans, and Rodriguez was 1-for-1 with two runs scored.
Garner knocked in three runs on a pair of hits for the Eagles.
Spartan right hander
Alex Wright (0-3) was charged with the loss. He struck out four in 4.1 innings pitched for the Spartans.
Nolan Manzer struck out five in 2.1 innings of relief.
The Spartans are off until opening MEAC Northern Division play next Friday at Coppin State.
