Spartan Women's Tennis Now Up to 6 Weekly Awards This Year

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women's tennis took home two more honors on Wednesday when senior Paula Fortuno and freshman Laura Ruiz became the latest to earn weekly awards. Fortuno was named the MEAC Player of the Week, and Ruiz was tabbed the MEAC Rookie of the Week.

The duo helped NSU win the MEAC Northern Division title over the weekend with a 5-2 win at Delaware State, as the Spartans finished 3-0 in the division this year. They also defeated Virginia Wesleyan last Thursday at home, 6-0.

Fortuno won 6-4, 6-3 over Lolita Kozina at No. 1 singles against DSU, the fifth win in a row for the Spartans that improved their record to 7-5 overall. She and Ruiz also won 6-4 at No. 3 doubles over the Hornet duo of Cassandra Boltman and Alina Polyvana.

Ruiz' No. 3 singles win clinched the match victory over Delaware State. After dropping the first set to Daria Julia, 6-2, Ruiz came back to win 7-6, 6-0 to give NSU its fourth point of the match. She also won 6-0, 6-0 over Alexa Brewster of Virginia Wesleyan at No. 1 singles. Ruiz teamed up with fellow freshman Zada McMorris for a 6-2 No. 3 doubles win over VWU's Anna Rogers and Sophia Bibbo.

This week marked the third time NSU swept the women's tennis weekly honors. Ruiz won both player and rookie of the week on March 3. Zoe Fraser (player) and Lydia Oviedo (rookie) won last week's awards.

The Spartan women will return to the court and close out the regular season on Friday at the NSU Tennis Complex for a 1 p.m. match against Christopher Newport.
