NORFOLK, Va. – Left handed pitchers
James Deloatch and
Dalton Barham both tossed complete games and combined for 21 strikeouts to spark Norfolk State to a 6-2, 3-2 doubleheader sweep of Coppin State on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
Deloatch (4-2) scattered six hits and two runs while fanning a career-high 11 batters to lead NSU (14-20, 10-5 MEAC) to the game one victory. Barham (2-1) was just as good in the nightcap, recording his first career complete game while striking out a career-high 10 batters to lead the Spartans to their fifth win in a row.
Deloatch threw his second complete game of the season to get the afternoon started. The first also came against Coppin State, back on March 26, when he set his previous career high with nine punchouts.
Coppin State got on the board first with a two-out, two-run double by Grant Williams in the top of the second. CSU also threated in the third, notching a pair of hits, but Deloatch allowed just one hit the rest of the way.
NSU, meanwhile, scored in the second through fifth innings. In the second,
Jacob Council singled and scored on the first of four CSU errors in the contest. In the third,
Alsander Womack singled, stole second and scored on a double by
Ty Hanchey to tie the game.
The Spartans took the lead for good in the fourth.
Danny Hosley walked and scored on a double by
Phillip Boykin. Womack drove in Boykin with a single to center field to put the Spartans in front, 4-2.
Hosley singled in a run and an
Adam Collins groundout brought home another in a two-run fifth.
Womack went 2-for-4 with two of NSU's five stolen bases. Council batted 2-for-3, while Hosley was 1-for-1 with two runs scored.
In game two, Conner Walker hit a two-out RBI single in the first, and Wellington Balsley scored on an NSU error in the third to again start the Eagles out in front.
But just like in game one, the Spartans rallied.
Dionte Brown led off the fourth with NSU's first hit of the game off Eagle starter Tim Ruffino. Womack then drew a walk. One out later,
Mason Velasquez blasted a two-run double into the right-center field gap to tie the score.
The Spartans manufactured the winning run in the bottom of the sixth without recording a hit. Womack drew another walk to start the ninth and end Ruffino's day. Relief pitcher Bradley Tuttle then hit
Adam Collins with a pitch. With one out, Womack and Collins executed a double steal, and with two outs, Womack scored from third on an error by the Eagles.
Barham finished off CSU from there, retiring the side in order in the seventh. His 10
th strikeout was the final out of the game.
Womack scored a pair of runs in the nightcap. He was 2-for-5 with three runs and three steals on the day.
The teams play the final game of the series at noon Sunday.
