NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's and women's tennis teams will both compete as the No. 1 seed from the Northern Division at this weekend's MEAC Championship. The conference office released the official seedings on Monday.
Â
Both Spartan programs won the MEAC Northern Division title this year at 3-0 each to earn the division's top seed. Both will take on the respective No. 2 seeds from the South in the semifinals. Unlike previous seasons, this year's MEAC Tournament will not hold quarterfinal matches.
Â
The NSU women face Florida A&M on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the semifinal round. The Spartan men will take on North Carolina A&T that same day at 12 p.m. Should both teams advance, the tournament finals will take place on Sunday, at 9 a.m. for the women and 12 p.m. for the men.
Â
Norfolk State went 8-5 overall this season on the women's side, defeating Howard, Coppin State and Delaware State to win the division along the way. The Spartans have not competed in the MEAC tournament semifinals since 2008.
Â
The Spartan men, meanwhile, defeated Howard, Coppin State and Morgan State earlier this month for the division title, part of a 7-4 overall record this year. They are making their first semifinals appearance since 2018.
Â
Neither team has won a MEAC title since Norfolk State joined the league prior to the 1997-98 academic year.
Â
The 2021 MEAC Tournament will be held at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion, the fifth straight time it will be contested there. Only the top two teams from each division qualified for the tournament this year.
