Hornets Top Spartans, Hosley 2-1 in Pitchers' Duel

NORFOLK, Va. – Spartan starting pitcher Danny Hosley tossed his fourth straight complete game, striking out 10 and allowing just five hits, but Delaware State starter Jordan Haddaway limited the Spartans to a single run as the Hornets edged NSU 2-1 on Saturday at Marty L. Miller Field, earning a weekend split of the teams' four-game series.

Hosley gave up two runs, both unearned, and fanned a career-high 10 batters. His previous three complete games were in seven-inning affairs, but in this one, the right hander went all nine. Ultimately, it was an unearned run that allowed the Hornets (6-12, 4-4 MEAC) to squeak past the Spartans (9-17, 5-3).

Norfolk State scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third. Adam Collins walked and took second on a sacrifice bunt. Dionte Brown then beat out a two-out infield single deep in the hole and Collins hustled home from second.

The Hornets tied the game in the fourth. Brady Daniels reached base on a passed ball as he struck out. Daniels came all the way around to score from first on a double by Krew Bouldin.

DSU took the lead in the sixth. Trey Paige led off with a single and advanced to second on a Spartan error. Bouldin knocked him in with a single for the go-ahead run.

Hosley held the Hornets scoreless the rest of the way, striking out the last two batters he faced to finish off his complete game. But the Spartans couldn't scratch again against Haddaway. In the seventh, Collins and Raphy Rodriguez both singled, but DSU threw out a Spartan runner at third to end the threat.

In the ninth, NSU designated hitter Jacob Council singled with one out. Pinch runner Jaran Davis stole second base, but Hornet reliever Chandler Fitzgerald retired the next two Spartans, the last by strikeout, to close out the game.

Haddaway (1-2) allowed seven hits and one run with four strikeouts in 8.1 innings. Fitzgerald notched his second save of the year.
Rodriguez went 2-for-3 while Collins was 1-for-2 with a run scored for the Spartans, who out-hit the Hornets 7-5.

Bouldin finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs for DSU.

NSU hits the road for its next five games, beginning with a non-conference contest at Longwood at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
