NORFOLK, Va. – James Deloatch threw eight strong innings, and
Ty Hanchey and
Korey Singh both hit three-run home runs in a seven-run fifth inning that lifted Norfolk State to a 9-1 win in an ESPNU-televised game on Friday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
Deloatch (5-2) allowed just four hits and struck out three in tossing a career-high eight innings.
Seven different Spartans accounted for the team's seven hits. But none were bigger than the two homers in the fifth when NSU (19-21, 15-6 MEAC) extended its lead from 2-1 to 9-1. The rally started with one out when
Dionte Brown drew his second walk of the game.
Alsander Womack singled him to second and Hanchey hit the first pitch he saw from FAMU starter Josh Hancock far over the wall in right to make it 5-1.
After Hanchey's homer,
Mason Velasquez reached on an error and
Jacob Council singled.
Korey Singh then hit the first pitch he saw from Hancock to almost the same spot as Hanchey did, making it 8-1. The Spartans tacked on another run in the inning on a double-steal try.
Deloatch kept the Rattler bats quiet the rest of the way. He walked just two hitters and allowed only one hit after the third inning.
Tyrin Everette tossed a scoreless ninth for NSU.
Both teams scored once in the first. L.J. Bryant tripled in a run for FAMU (15-27, 9-8). Brown walked, stole second and advanced to third on a Rattler error before scoring on
Alsander Womack's groundout in the bottom of the first.
The Spartans scored in similar fashion in the third.
Raphy Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, stole second and took third on another FAMU error. Womack hit another RBI groundout to give NSU a 2-1 lead.
Womack had two RBIs for the Spartans and Brown scored a pair of runs. Singh and Hanchey both knocked in three.
The teams play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
