NORFOLK, Va. – After not competing in an outdoor event for nearly two years, Norfolk State senior
Martha Bissah returned with a vengeance over the weekend in the team's first outdoor meet of 2021. She was rewarded by the conference office with the MEAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week award on Wednesday.
The Accra, Ghana native ran a time of 4:26.77 in the 1,500 meters on Saturday at the Chanticleer Challenge at Coastal Carolina. Bissah won the race while also running the fastest time in the MEAC this year in the event.
She also ran a leg of the 4x400 relay that posted a time of 3:43.58, good for second at the team's first outdoor meet of the year and the third-best time so far in the MEAC.
Bissah had not run in an outdoor meet for Norfolk State since June of 2019 at the NCAA Championships or in any meet since February of 2020 at the MEAC Championships. The entire 2020 outdoor season was cancelled due to COVID-19, and Bissah did not have eligibility left for indoors coming into the year.
The Spartans will next head to the Gamecock Invitational this Saturday at the University of South Carolina.
