NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State had five players earn their way onto the MEAC All-Time Men's Tennis Team, announced by the conference this week in celebration of its 50
th anniversary.
MEAC Players of the Year
Andres Alcaraz, Miroslav Vlcek and Dzmitry Zyhmantovich were joined by first-team All-MEAC players Arsenio Culver and Daniel Prokes in earning enough votes to be named to the 50
th anniversary team. The conference is honoring the top 50 players from each sport this year as part of its 50
th anniversary celebration.
Alcaraz finished up his NSU career this season and was named the 2021 MEAC Player of the Year after leading the Spartans to the MEAC Northern Division title at 3-0. He earned first-team All-MEAC honors both this year and his sophomore season in 2018, a season in which he was also named MEAC Player of the Week four times. The Pachuca, Mexico native went 9-3 this year in singles and 10-3 his sophomore year. He finished with a career 12-1 MEAC singles record and 31 overall singles wins., competing at either No. 1 or No. 2 singles his entire time at NSU.
Zyhmantovich was twice named first-team All-MEAC during his two seasons at NSU in 2013 and '14. He was voted the MEAC Player of the Year in 2014, going 14-4 overall in singles. He also went 14-6 his freshman year in 2013 when he was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year. In his two seasons, he posted a 28-10 overall record, 7-1 in the league, competing almost entirely at No. 1 singles. A native of Minsk, Belarus, he also held an 18-14 overall doubles record, 4-3 in the MEAC. He led NSU to a share of the 2013 Southern Division title, the program's first regular season crown, and to the MEAC Tournament final in 2014.
Vlcek was the first Spartan to win both major MEAC awards, taking home the MEAC Rookie of the Year honor in 2006 and the MEAC Player of the Year award in 2008. He was named first-team All-MEAC both seasons in addition to second-team honors as a sophomore in 2007 and a senior in 2009. He went 9-2 in singles his junior season to also earn VaSID All-State second-team honors. Hailing from Vyskov, Czech Republic, he posted a 15-4 singles record as a freshman, and for his career he went 41-16 in singles, 17-7 in the MEAC. He did even better in doubles, posting a 42-12 overall record, 21-3 in the league.
Culver was a three-time first-team All-MEAC player during his four seasons from 2009-12, the only player in school history to earn first-team honors three times and just the second along with Vlcek to earn all-conference honors at least three times. Culver, a Philadelphia native, was a six-time MEAC Player of the Week. He finished his sophomore year in 2010 ranked 20
th in the ITA Atlantic Region and was ranked ninth in the region his senior year in 2012 in doubles along with Ben Marks. Culver posted a 44-21 overall singles record, 8-5 in the MEAC, as well as a 43-18 doubles mark.
Prokes was the first NSU player to earn first-team All-MEAC honors twice, doing so in 2002 and '03. He led the Spartans to a pair of third-place finishes those years, part of a 15-4 overall MEAC record during that time for the men's team. The Czech Republic native went 9-7 in singles and 9-3 in doubles his junior year in 2002, before posting a 12-4 singles mark his senior year in 2003, 13-4 in doubles.
The MEAC is using online fan voting to select its all-time teams in every sport in conjunction with the ongoing celebration of its 50th year of operation. More than 250 votes were cast for the men's tennis all-time team, with fans, media representatives, institution sports information contacts and others taking part.
To be considered on the ballot, players must have been named one of the following: First Team All-MEAC, MEAC Player of the Year, MEAC Rookie of the Year or MEAC Championship Outstanding Performer.
