NORFOLK, Va. – Alondra Maldonado finished with 18 kills to lead Delaware State to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-19) over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Echols Hall.
The Hornets (14-1, 2-0 MEAC) hit .389 as a team with 46 kills and nine errors to top Norfolk State (4-9, 0-2) in the Spartans' MEAC home opener.
Shonte Seale paced the Spartans with seven kills and
Rachel Williams added five with no attack errors.
NSU led 4-2 early in set 1 after two kills by
Paola Matos. But a short time later, the Hornets used an 8-0 run, seven off the serve of Malgorzata Andersohn, to take a 15-10 lead. DSU had four blocks in the run.
The Hornets hit .536 as a team in set 2, tallying 16 kills to just one error to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Maldonado had four kills in the set.
DSU jumped out to a 10-6 lead in set 3 before the Spartans rallied. NSU scored the next five points, with Seale and
Kendra McRuffin both notching a kill and combining on a block to give the Spartans the lead. But Maldonado put down three kills in an 8-1 DSU spurt that helped the Hornets regain control. She did not commit an error and hit .667 for the match.
Karen Cordero added 12 kills for DSU. Andersohn posted 23 assists and 13 digs.
Nicole Rodriguez paced NSU with 18 digs, 11 coming in set 1 alone.
Caris Cross led with 18 assists.
The Spartans are on the road for their next two matches, beginning with a Friday matchup at Howard.
