NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's basketball team picked up two weekly MEAC honors Tuesday following its sweep of Coppin State and Morgan State, as guards
Deja Francis and
Camille Downs were selected by the league office as award winners.
Francis was named MEAC Player of the Week after averaging 28.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game to help the Spartans to a pair of wins. She scored a career-high 32 points against Coppin State, hitting 8-of-14 from the floor, 2-of-2 from 3-point range and 14-of-16 from the free-throw line. She added five rebounds and two steals in the outing. Then on Monday against Morgan State, Francis scored 24 points while posting three rebounds, three steals and two assists in another victory. She was 10-of-14 against the Bears.
For the week, Francis shot 64 percent from the floor and 90 from the foul line. This is her first time winning a weekly MEAC award this season.
Downs posted a career-high 10 steals in Monday's win over Morgan State, tied for the third-most in a Division I women's game this year. It's also the most by a Spartan since
Chanette Hicks had 10 at Jacksonville on Nov. 30, 2019, and just two shy of tying Lisa Rice's school mark. Downs also scored 20 points and had eight rebounds in the win over Morgan.
This is Downs' second Defensive Player of the Week honor this year and fourth award total.
The Spartans are back in action this Saturday at South Carolina State.
