VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Jahquan Christopher broke a nine-year old school record in the heptathlon as the NSU men's track and field team competed in its final regular-season meet, the second annual
Kenneth Giles Invitational over the weekend at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Christopher amassed 4,545 points to top Marcus Finney's record by exactly 100 points. Finney set the mark in 2013. Christopher was first in five of the seven events in recording the top score for a MEAC athlete in the heptathlon this year.
The Spartans excelled in the field events over the weekend.
Joshua Sutton won the high jump with a top height of 6 feet, 6 inches. Freshman
Joshua Peterson was runner-up in both the long jump and triple jump, leaping a PR of 23-8 in the long jump. Another freshman,
Kalon Jeffery, placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 12-5.5.
NSU also found success on the track. In the 200 meters, the Spartans had four of the top eight finishers.
Kai Cole led the way by winning with a personal record of 20.93 seconds.
Trequan Barnes was fifth in 21.20,
Anthony Franklin PRed with a time of 21.23 to finish sixth, and
Savien Hayes finished in eighth in 21.63.
Other wins on the track came via
Regan Kimtai in the 800 (1:58.14) and Meshack Kichirchir in the 5,000 meters (15:19.58).
The Spartans return to the VBSC for the conference indoor championship Feb. 21-23.
